Bloomberg Philanthropies and Vanity Fair hosted a unique sustainability conference, ‘Climate Exchange’ at the Bloomberg LP European Headquarters in London.
The Climate Exchange focused on community stories and the personal effects of climate change, with panelists including Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan; investor Stephen Brenninkmeijer; sustainable fashion designer, Stella McCartney; Chairman of the Tiffany & Co Foundation, Anisa Kamadoli Costa; 13th US Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy; and Mayor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, William Peduto.

On the heels of new data showing an alarming decline in U.S. life expectancy over the past three years, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a $50 million investment in combatting the nation’s opioid epidemic. The initiative—a first-of-its-kind partnership between Vital Strategies, The Pew Charitable Trusts, Johns Hopkins University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the CDC Foundation—will help up to 10 states over the next three years implement solutions to strengthen prevention and treatment efforts that offer the most potential to address the root causes of opioid addiction and save lives.

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced the City of Coral Springs, in partnership with the City of Parkland, is a winner of its 2018 Public Art Challenge. Coral Springs will receive $1 million for its project “Inspiring Community Healing After Gun Violence: The Power of Art.” The project will use art to bring the community together in collective healing and reflection following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (MSD) shooting in February of 2018.

This week, as America celebrated Veterans Day, leaders from higher education, military, and veterans’ organizations met at a national convening in Arlington, Virginia, to declare their determination to open new doors to veterans. The American Talent Initiative, one of the organizations featured at the convening, announced that more than 30 ATI members have joined a community of practice focused on improving military veterans’ access to high-graduation-rate institutions. The commitments of these public and private colleges and universities from across the nation will help achieve ATI’s mission to enroll 50,000 additional low- and moderate-income students at top institutions by 2025.
