Bloomberg Philanthropies Announces Initiative to Support India’s National Clean Air Program

At the World Sustainable Development Summit in New Delhi, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), and the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation launched a new initiative on air quality in collaboration with the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The initiative will bring together research and civil society organizations to offer technical assistance on air quality issues in support of India’s National Clean Air Program and reiterates the recognition of the major challenges presented by air pollution in India and across the world, with detrimental impacts on health, quality of life and economic productivity. More than three-quarters of Indian cities do not meet the country’s air pollution standards.

Joining Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) General Manager and CEO Clint Bullock at the OUC Gardenia campus, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Action Michael R. Bloomberg announced that the potential impact of programs pursued in the Bloomberg Philanthropies American Cities Climate Challenge are projected to eliminate 40 million metric tons of carbon emissions by 2025—comparable to shuttering 10 coal plants or taking 8.5 million cars off the road for one year. Climate action will also improve lives for millions of citizens around the country, through advancements in public transit, cleaner air, and cheaper energy bills.

Global and digital leaders are convening in New York City to promote and improve opportunities for teaching international understanding and engaged citizenship. In recent years these efforts have made a major leap forward with the Global Scholars digital exchange program operated by Global Cities, Inc. a Program of Bloomberg Philanthropies. This year the six-year-old program is connecting over 15,000 students in nearly 700 classrooms through its e-classroom discussion boards. The program’s students, ages 10 to 13, live in 50 cities across 25 countries. Digital technology is integral to the program, allowing students to collaborate with their peers across the world on a shared curriculum and—of equal importance— create and present their original work.

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced that Camden, New Jersey has been named a Bloomberg Philanthropies 2018 Public Art Challenge winner. The city will receive $1 million for “A New View,” a public art project that will transform sites plagued by illegal dumping along major transit corridors into dynamic art spaces, inspiring residents and attracting visitors. It will include art installations and creative programming at several sites along Camden’s rail, road, and bike routes.

Tulsa has been named a Bloomberg Philanthropies 2018 Public Art Challenge winner. Tulsa will receive $1 million for “The Greenwood Art Project,” a group of temporary public artworks which celebrate and commemorate a vibrant community in the Historic Greenwood District known as Black Wall Street.
On Thursday, January 17th, Michael R. Bloomberg, philanthropist and former New York City Mayor, will join Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum and artist Rick Lowe for a celebratory press conference at the Greenwood Cultural Center located at 322 North Greenwood Avenue.

A nationwide alliance of leading colleges and universities has made significant progress in improving opportunity for low- and moderate-income students, according to a new report.
Members of the American Talent Initiative (ATI) have increased enrollment of students who receive federal Pell grants by 7,291 since the 2015-16 school year. This momentum, highlighted in A 2018 Report on the Progress of the American Talent Initiative in its First Two Years, released today, indicates that ATI is on track to reach its goal to make higher education at colleges and universities with high graduation rates available to 50,000 additional low- and moderate-income students by 2025.
