Bloomberg Philanthropies released Collaborative Cities: A Guide for Designing, Implementing, and Sustaining Strategic Partnerships through its philanthropic consulting arm, Bloomberg Associates, as part of its efforts to support global municipal leaders and provide resources to help them respond to complex needs. Many city leaders have prioritized cross-sector alliances to tackle challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic crisis. This new guide, led by Bloomberg Associates’ Strategic Partnerships team, shares strategies for building and administering effective collaboration across government, philanthropy, nonprofit, and business and highlights unique experiences in cities.

18 Global Cities Selected to Participate in the World Cities Culture Forum’s Leadership Exchange Program Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies & Google Arts and Culture

Cultural leaders from 18 cities will take part in the latest round of World Cities Culture Forum’s Leadership Exchange Program. Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and Google Arts & Culture, it will facilitate collaboration between cities facing common challenges and bring together urban leaders in creative fields to support culture and the global creative economy. Leaders from Amsterdam, Austin, Barcelona, Chengdu, Lagos, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Milan, Montreal, New York, Paris, Stockholm, Sydney, Vienna, Warsaw, and Zurich have been selected to participate in seven collaborative exchanges.

Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Flamboyan Arts Fund Partner on Arts Innovation and Management Training Program in Puerto Rico

Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Flamboyan Arts Fund announced their collaboration on the Arts Innovation and Management (AIM) Puerto Rico program. The Flamboyan Arts Fund is a partnership between Flamboyan Foundation, composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, his family, and the Broadway musical Hamilton, which raised $15 million from the show’s run in Puerto Rico in January 2019 to preserve, sustain, and amplify the arts on the island. AIM Puerto Rico will bring together national and local experts to provide 10 Puerto Rico-based nonprofit organizations with bilingual arts management training and tailored consulting services for fundraising, strategic planning, and digital marketing. The program will also include resilience training for responding to natural disasters.

Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Brussels-Capital Region Government and Brussels Environment announced the launch of the Brussels Clean Air Partnership, a new initiative to tackle air pollution in Brussels, seat of the European Commission. Coinciding with the kick-off of the EU Green Week 2020, this new partnership, alongside Bloomberg Philanthropies’ ongoing work across Europe, supports the European Union’s ambitious goals set out in the European Green Deal to cut pollution levels in cities.

American University President Sylvia Mathews Burwell Speaks to 296 City Leaders at Fifth Virtual Convening to Aid COVID-19 Social and Economic Recovery

Sylvia Mathews Burwell, President of American University and former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, yesterday addressed 296 city leaders, including 109 mayors, from 208 cities at the fifth session of the Leading Social and Economic Recovery Series, the latest offering for cities as part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies COVID-19 Local Response Initiative.

The Leading Social and Economic Recovery Series virtually convenes global city leaders monthly through the end of the year. The sessions focus on equitable recovery, building and maintaining resident trust, crisis budgeting and fiscal recovery, and supporting city workforces during a period of profound change and uncertainty.

Thirty U.S. Cities to Tackle Budget Crises and Advance Equity with Support from Bloomberg Philanthropies

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced the 30 U.S. cities that will participate in the What Works Cities City Budgeting for Equity and Recovery program, a new effort that will help cities confront budget crises while strengthening their commitment to equity in the wake of COVID-19. The program will help cities develop and implement plans to drive financial recovery and ensure that their budget crises do not disproportionately harm low-income residents and communities of color. It will also provide the opportunity for leaders from the 30 cities to problem solve with a network of peers and produce a set of tactics for other local leaders to follow.

Sixteen Major Donors and Foundations Commit Unprecedented $156 Million to Support Black, Latinx, Asian and Indigenous Arts Organizations

Sixteen major donors and foundations announced an unprecedented commitment to a two-pronged national and regional initiative to recognize “America’s Cultural Treasures.” Together, the funders will grant more than $156 million to support Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous arts organizations in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has devastated America’s arts and culture landscape. The funding includes $85 million from the proceeds of the Ford Foundation’s historic social bond offering announced earlier this year.
