Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Global Tobacco Control
Tobacco kills more than 7 million people a year mostly in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). These are completely preventable deaths. While average smoking rates have declined globally from 22.8% in 2007 to 16.4% in 2023, approximately 1 billion people still smoke. The tobacco industry spends tens of billions of dollars annually on aggressive marketing campaigns often aimed at young people, who might be unaware of the dangers of tobacco use.
To address this prevalent issue, the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use works with partners to help cities and countries pass and implement MPOWER policies, measures proven to reduce use and protect people from harm.
At the 2025 World Conference on Tobacco Control (formerly known as the World Conference on Tobacco or Health) in Dublin, the winners of the 2025 Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Global Tobacco Control were announced. The awards, first hosted in 2009 at the World Health Conference on Tobacco or Health in Mumbai, celebrate the significant strides governments and non-governmental organizations have made in adopting and implementing best-practice tobacco control policies.
