Video: What is a Charter School?

Public charter schools are free public schools that ensure that K-12 students’ zip code or socioeconomic status doesn’t dictate the quality of their education. Watch and share the video explainer to learn why these schools can make a significant difference for the children most in need of a great education and a route to a successful future.

Bloomberg Philanthropies made a recent commitment to invest $750 million in public charter schools in the next five years to help close achievement gaps for students across the country. The plan will create 150,000 additional seats for children in charter schools in 20 U.S. metro areas, including New York City. It will help build a stronger, more equitable, and more modern model of public education – one that is based on evidence, centered on children, and governed by accountability and high standards.
