In 2020, Bloomberg Philanthropies worked to improve the lives of millions of people in 810 cities and 170 countries, investing $1.6 billion around the world. Over his lifetime, Mike Bloomberg, Bloomberg L.P. and Bloomberg Philanthropies founder, World Health Organization Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases, the U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, and 108th mayor of New York City, has so far given $11.1 billion to philanthropy.

New studies show School Streets improve air quality

To measure the air quality benefits of the new School Streets, 30 cutting-edge sensors from the Breathe London network were installed at 18 primary schools across Brent, Enfield and Lambeth to record nitrogen dioxide levels. The air quality monitoring project, funded by FIA Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies, was launched in September 2020 to give the most accurate indication yet of how the School Streets scheme is working.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Invites U.S. Cities to Apply for Grants and Guidance to Transform Streets and Public Spaces Through the Asphalt Art Initiative

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced that cities can now apply for Asphalt Art Initiative grants, which will provide as many as 20 U.S. cities up to $25,000 each for projects that use art and design to improve street safety, revitalize public spaces, and engage residents of their communities. This program, announced at the CityLab 2021 global cities summit, hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies and Aspen Institute, is inspired by work done to improve pedestrian safety and revitalize New York City streets during Michael R. Bloomberg’s tenure as Mayor from 2002-2013 and the work of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ pro bono consulting arm Bloomberg Associates.

Bloomberg to Help Reduce Financial Barriers for Top Talent to Begin Careers in Public Service

Bloomberg Philanthropies and NYU’s Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service announced the Georgina and Charlotte Bloomberg Public Service Fellows Program, launching in the 2021-2022 academic year, to help ensure that the most dedicated and innovative future leaders have access to, and robust training for, careers in public service. Bloomberg Philanthropies has committed $25 million to endow the competitive program, which is named after founder and 108th New York City mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s daughter, Georgina, and mother, Charlotte, both of whom earned degrees from NYU – Georgina from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 2010 and Charlotte from the School of Commerce, Accounts, and Finance (now the Stern School of Business) in 1929.

On the first day of the 2021 Powering Past Coal Alliance Global Summit, Michael R. Bloomberg, the U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions and Founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies, launched the Bloomberg Global Coal Countdown – a new online data resource that tracks the retirement of coal plant units around the world. Created in partnership with the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), the dashboard provides data about the world’s remaining coal plant units as governments and businesses accelerate the transition from coal power to clean energy.

Bloomberg Philanthropies & Harvard University Announce Creation of the Bloomberg Center for Cities to Support Mayors Around the World as They Face Unprecedented Challenges

Bloomberg Philanthropies, in collaboration with Harvard University, announced an expansion of support for city leaders with a new $150 million investment to establish the university-wide Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University. This Center builds upon the success of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, a collaboration between Bloomberg Philanthropies, Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School established in 2017, and will strengthen the capabilities of mayors and their teams, advance effective organizational practices in city halls around the world, support a new generation of public servants as they encounter unprecedented challenges in the years to come, and produce new research and instructional materials that will help city leaders.

United Nations Secretary-General Appoints Michael R. Bloomberg as Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Michael R. Bloomberg as his Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions. The COP26 High Level Climate Action Champions, Gonzalo Muñoz and Nigel Topping, also named Mr. Bloomberg the first Global Ambassador for the Race to Zero and Race to Resilience campaigns.
