BLOOMBERG PHILANTHROPIES IS TAKING ACTION TO PROTECT THE PLANET

DRIVING STRONG, MEASURABLE AND LOCAL ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Environment program brings together a wide range of partners, including cities, businesses, public health advocates and citizen’s groups, to address some of the most serious threats to our environment, including climate change and overfishing.  Left unchecked, carbon pollution causes long-term impacts on the global climate, including rising global temperatures, rising sea levels and extreme weather patterns, as well as health risks such as worsening smog and a range of respiratory illnesses. Overfishing poses risks to a vital food and economic source for billions of people.

Bloomberg Philanthropies drives measurable, local action on climate and sustainability through our Sustainable Cities program, our Clean Energy program, our Vibrant Oceans Initiative, and via Mike Bloomberg’s unique role as the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change.

Sustainable Cities:

The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) is a network of nearly 75 of the world’s largest cities taking action to address climate change by developing and implementing policies and programs that generate measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks. Michael Bloomberg currently serves as President of the C40 Board.

Clean Energy:

Through our Clean Energy program – a portfolio that includes our Clean Energy Initiative and support for the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign – we’re helping address climate change, while also helping transition our economy to cleaner energy sources.

Vibrant Oceans:

Oceans provide food and livelihood for billions of people around the world. They are also home to some of the most beautiful and diverse ecosystems on the planet, and hold tremendous potential for scientific and medical advances. However, lack of management has led to rampant over-fishing, or taking more fish than can be naturally replaced. To reverse this trend, the Bloomberg Philanthropies Vibrant Oceans Initiative works in key areas around the world to restore fish populations and help meet the dietary needs of a growing global population.
