Xiye Bastida

Climate Justice Activist
Co-Founder, Re-Earth Initiative

Xiye Bastida is a 20 year old Climate Justice Activist. She was raised in Mexico as part of the Otomi Toltec Indigenous community and is now based in New York City. She saw first hand the impact of the climate crisis when her hometown flooded in 2015– ever since she decided to take action for Climate Justice. In 2020 she co-founded Re-Earth Initiative. Beforehand, Xiye served as the Youth representative in People’s Climate Movement and as a core-team member of Fridays For Future NYC where she helped organize the 2019 Climate Strike which brought out 300,000 people. Xiye is a current student at the University of Pennsylvania studying Environmental and Latinx Studies.

Xiye wrote the opening essay for the All We Can Save Anthology. She debuted her TED Talk in 2020 which now holds over one million views. Xiye gave the closing speech at the World Leadership Summit at COP26 where she called upon Heads of State to prioritize frontline communities in climate policy. She also gave the closing speech at the 2021 Biden Climate Summit where she called for the “Era of fossil fuels to be over.” Xiye was the recipient of the 2018 United Nations Spirit award. She was named one of Teen Vogue’s 21 under 21, was named Most Likely to Save the Planet by Refinery29, was named as one of the most influential Latinxs, and most recently, she was named of Harper Bazaar’s 2022 ICONS.
