Bloomberg Philanthropies Expands Women’s Economic Development Program in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo with Renewed $10 Million Gift to the Relationship Coffee Institute

At the Bloomberg Philanthropies U.S.-Africa Business Forum, the foundation announced it will invest an additional $10 million to expand the organization’s women’s economic development program in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through a grant to the Relationship Coffee Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the livelihoods of rural Rwandan women coffee farmers through training and market access, more women will be able to benefit and participate in Africa’s economic growth.

Johns Hopkins University and Michael R. Bloomberg Launch the Bloomberg American Health Initiative

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health announced that Bloomberg Philanthropies, founded by businessman, philanthropist, World Health Organization Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases, and three-term mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg, will give $300 million to create the Bloomberg American Health Initiative. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the school, the gift sets the school and its partners on a path to transform our national approach to modern public health challenges.

Launched in partnership  with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade just over one year ago, Data for Health is a four-year, $100 million initiative aimed at improving health data in low- and middle-income countries spanning Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. Twenty Cities Advance in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Latin American and Caribbean Mayors Challenge

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced the 20 Latin American and Caribbean cities selected as finalists in its 2016 Mayors Challenge, a competition that encourages cities to generate bold ideas that solve urban challenges and improve city life – and have potential to spread.  The finalists, hailing from 10 countries, will move forward to compete for a 5 million USD grand prize and four 1 million USD awards, as well as extensive implementation support. The ideas reflect creative new approaches to some of the most pressing issues facing cities in the region, including mobility, youth unemployment, waste management, obesity, and social and economic inclusion for immigrants and people with disabilities.
