Baltimore Mayor Catherine E. Pugh, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Founder of Bloomberg L.P. and Bloomberg Philanthropies Michael R. Bloomberg and Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO Lloyd C. Blankfein announced a $10 million commitment to continue Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses in Baltimore to help create jobs and economic growth. This $10 million commitment in Baltimore, a co-investment between Goldman Sachs and Bloomberg Philanthropies, marks the first-ever co-investment in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, which provides a practical business education and access to capital and for small business owners.

The latest WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic published today finds that more countries have implemented tobacco control policies, ranging from graphic pack warnings and advertising bans to no smoking areas. About 4.7 billion people – 63% of the world’s population – are covered by at least one comprehensive tobacco control measure, which has quadrupled since 2007 when only 1 billion people, and 15% of the world’s population, were covered. Strategies to implement such policies have saved millions of people from an early death.

As a result, an estimated 1.3 million deaths and 20 to 50 million injuries occur every year, with 90 percent of these fatalities occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

Today, Mike Bloomberg, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, announced a commitment of up to $15 million to support the operations of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretariat, including its work to help countries implement their commitments under the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Bloomberg will also work with other governments and philanthropies that may be interested in supporting the UNFCCC at this critical time. The pledge aims to fill a significant funding gap that comes as a result of President Donald Trump’s announced withdrawal from the Paris agreement and proposed steep budget cuts for international programs, including on climate.

In his letter, Bloomberg explains how and why governments and philanthropy can do more to save lives – from implementing important public health policies, such as road safety, tobacco control and obesity prevention. He also explains why he has committed $800 million over the next six years to fight NCDs and how he will make this public health issue a focus under his new role as the World Health Organization’s Global Ambassador for NCDs.
