Bloomberg Philanthropies Invests Additional $115 Million in Resolve to Save Lives To Continue Preventing Deaths from Heart Disease

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced additional funding for Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL), a global public health non-profit organization focused on preventing deaths from heart disease. Heart attacks and strokes are the leading cause of death worldwide, and over the past five years RTSL has demonstrated that prevention is possible at scale. Bloomberg Philanthropies’ new commitment of $115 million over the next five years will support Resolve to Save Lives’ goal of saving 100 million lives from cardiovascular disease by 2047.

Through this partnership, 73 rising seniors from New York City career and technical education public high schools are getting paid internships this summer at 35 New York City cultural organizations across all five boroughs.

At the Sustainable Blue Economy Investment Forum held alongside the UN Ocean Conference, Bloomberg Philanthropies joined the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) coalition — the first UN-supported public-private partnership designed to leverage private investments to fill a funding gap for coral reef resilience and solutions. Bloomberg Philanthropies pledged USD $8 million to the fund, building on Bloomberg’s decade-long efforts to protect coral reefs and marine ecosystems increasingly threatened by climate change through its Vibrant Oceans Initiative.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Announces Mayors Challenge Winning Project to Combat Climate Change Will Spread to Seven Global Cities

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced that seven cities from Europe and the United States will receive support to adopt Stockholm’s 2014 Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Mayors Challenge Winning Biochar Project, which turns plant waste from parks and homes – everything from grass clippings to trees and limbs – into a charcoal-like substance that residents can then use in their yards and gardens to help combat climate change.  When biochar is used as a soil fertilizer it promotes plant growth while simultaneously absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and locking it into the soil as well as reduces stormwater runoff.

With Bloomberg’s support, the Incubator will help the governments accelerate their transition to sustainable and inclusive maritime development and marine conservation, while mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Joins $1B USD Pledge to Protect 30 Percent of the Ocean by 2030

June 28, 2022

At the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, Bloomberg Philanthropies and eight philanthropic partners committed a collective $1 billion USD to support ocean conservation and the creation, expansion, and management of marine protected areas. This single commitment is roughly equal to all philanthropic giving for marine protected areas and habitat protection over the past decade and will help put ambitious ocean conservation goals within reach by supporting initiatives that help governments, and indigenous and local communities protect at least 30 percent of the ocean by 2030. This pledge builds on Bloomberg’s decade-long efforts to protect coral reefs and marine ecosystems increasingly threatened by climate change through its Vibrant Oceans Initiative.
